Children (Paediatric) Eye Assessment

Introduction

Eye examination ideally should be done at the age of 4-5 years old in all healthy children. Children who wear glasses should have scheduled eye examinations yearly. Children with vision problems should see an eye doctor earlier since chances to recover from lazy eyes is higher once the eye condition is treated.

Recommendation

The American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Association for Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus recommend the following timeline for children eye exams at these age groups;

  1. Newborn
  2. Infant (6 to 12 months old)
  3. Pre-schooler (3 to 6 years old)
  4. School age (Above 7 years old)
